Here are just a few of our favorite first times Anya Taylor-Joy shared with us:

1.

Anya’s first audition ever was actually for the role of Young Maleficent in Disney’s Maleficent.

She explained, “It was my first experience of rejection, like true rejection. And it was Disney which, for me, was like, ‘Oh my god,’ even though I look nothing like [Angelina Jolie]. I definitely cried for a very long time after that happened.”

2.

On her first day on set of Emma, she was definitely nervous to be among such British “icons.”

Anya continued, saying, “I was really frightened my first day of rehearsals because I just saw all of these, like, icons of cinema come in.”

3.

One of the first times she remembers being starstruck was when she met Saoirse Ronan.

Anya recalled, “She was a big, you know, idol for me when I was little, and I just, I don’t remember what I said. I don’t think I was very cool.”

4.

The first time Anya watched Clueless was at a sleepover when she was 13 or 14 years old — honestly, like most of us, I’m sure.

She joked that the last time she watched Clueless was “probably like last week. I watch that movie a lot. That movie is a really good movie.”

5.

Anya’s first on-screen kiss was actually with James McAvoy in Split.

Universal Pictures

She explained the experience, saying, “It was an odd first kiss to have, considering he was playing my captor. And I had to have my eyes open the whole time while he was pretending to be like a 9-year-old boy.”

6.

The first scene she filmed for Emma was actually the moment between Emma and Mr. Elton in the back of a carriage.

Focus Features

She said, “Josh O’Connor and I were in this carriage that wasn’t really moving and the scene takes place towards the end of the film. It was really fun because we got to do it a whole bunch of different ways. And Josh is just so funny that it was quite difficult to not be laughing the whole time when you’re in such an enclosed space with him.”

Anya’s first impression of Bill Nighy was just that he’s “the coolest man.”

Focus Features

She continued, saying, “He’s the coolest man that you will ever meet, like that role is taken.”

8.

And her first impression of Johnny Flynn, who plays George Knightley, was that they instantly had a “brother-sister relationship.”

Focus Features

Anya said, “We found bickering really funny. It’s lovely when you can feel so safe with somebody that you know that you can act and try absolutely anything and they’ll go with you on it.”

9.

The first book-to-movie adaptation she remembers loving was Jeremy Sumpter’s Peter Pan.

BuzzFeed / Via youtu.be

Anya said, “I had the world’s biggest crush on Peter Pan, like, forever. Just that character and that book was just everything I’d ever wanted in my life, and then I saw Jeremy Sumpter do it in 2003 and my heart just could not handle it. I think I watched that film every single day for like four months.”

10.

And finally, the first Jane Austen novel she read was actually Emma.

Focus Features

Anya also remembers reading “a collection of letters that [Jane] wrote her sister Cassandra” very early on, too.
