But, never fear! Last Friday Netflix dropped Murphy’s latest project Ratched to help appease our spooky souls.

From the characters to the cinematography to the unexpected twists, here are some reasons why Ratched should be at the top of your Netflix list. *warning: slight spoilers ahead*

1.

Sarah Paulson plays another iconic yet creepy main character.

Netflix / Via giphy.com

Paulson has cemented herself as the ~queen of spooky season~ due to her numerous appearances on AHS and this role only elevates her status. No one plays relatable yet chillingly creepy quite like Sarah Paulson.

2.

The ensemble cast consists of unique, complex characters.

Netflix

A serial killer brother. A drug-addicted doctor. Sharon Stone with a monkey for a best friend. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the show’s myriad of characters with each one more outrageous than the last.

3.

The wardrobe is phenomenal.

Netflix

I can’t count how many times I pointed to my TV and said, “I would wear that.” The show’s outfits not only fit the time period it’s set in, but also stretches the boundaries with bold colors, interesting fabric patterns, and so. Many. Hats.

4.

The story centers around a sympathetic main character.

Netflix / Via giphy.com

Sure, Mildred Ratched is manipulative, condescending, and tried to straight-up murder a guy but her tragic backstory and connection with Gwendolyn gives her a softer edge in comparison to her hardened book counterpart.

5.

But, it still maintains a traditional villain arc.

I would pay so much money to watch a spin off of Sharon Stone and her monkey committing crimes together.

6.

Even though the show is set in the 1940s, the majority of the show follows women and their struggles with love, career, and mental health.

Netflix, Netlfix

Each performance was outstanding but I have to shout out Sophie Okonedo as Charlotte Wells, a patient with dissociative identity disorder. She completely dominated every scene she was in and, even when her storyline got dark, it was a joy to watch.

7.

The show embodies the spirit of American Horror Story so much it could be considered canon.

Netflix / Via giphy.com

With overlapping plots, breakout performances, and a finale that will have you saying, “WTF?!”, any AHS fan will enjoy this show.

8.

We are blessed with a beautiful wlw plotline.

Netflix

Mildred and Gwendolyn’s love story was genuine and intense as they tried to navigate a less than accepting society while also staying true to who they are and who they love.

9.

The cinematography is out of this world.

Netflix

Look at this shot and tell me it isn’t gorgeous. I dare you.

10.

And, finally, the plot twists are shocking and layered.

Netflix / Via giphy.com

While we do find out Edmund Tolleson, a serial killer, is Mildred’s brother in the first two episodes, the revelation helps propel the plot forward and leads to even more jaw-dropping surprises that had me on the edge of my seat.
