Tamzin Merchant – who starred in Showtime’s The Tudors as Henry VIII’s fifth wife, Catherine Howard – actually played Dany when HBO shot the pilot episode in late 2009. Merchant reportedly had to leave the project for unknown reasons. Emilia told HeyYouGuys.co.uk, “Tamzin had the role and they filmed the pilot internally, so HBO people were the only ones who saw it. Once they decided to give the whole show the go-ahead, they decided to do a number of recasts.” The second pilot they shot – the one that aired – is the one Emilia is in.
