EA wants to bring its runaway success Apex Legends to mobile

The breakaway gaming hit of 2019, Apex Legends, is coming to mobile.

EA made the announcement in an earnings call released on Tuesday, which heaped praise on the Respawn-developed battle royale game.

Apex Legends is EA’s “fastest growing new game” ever, reaching 50 million players in its first month — a number that competitor Fortnite took three months to reach — and 30 percent of those players are new to EA.

It’s unsurprising that EA wants to continue that momentum on mobile, where the likes of PUBG and Fortnite have found much success.

“We are in advanced negotiations to bring Apex Legends to China and to mobile, and we will update you on timeframes when those negotiations are concluded,” EA’s earnings call noted.

There isn’t really much detail aside from that, so far. While maintaining the Apex Legends hype would surely would be a priority for EA, a note from the game’s executive producer Drew McCoy indicated they’re willing to take their time when it comes to new content and game development.

Last month, a Polygon report highlighted Fortnite’s massive growth, resulting in extreme pressure for developer Epic Games’ employees and contractors. In McCoy’s note, he explained that Respawn’s studio culture and the team’s health is something they’re keen to uphold.

“Our long-term goal is to ensure Apex Legends always feels alive and thriving, with a focus on quality of content over novelty or speed of release,” he said.

“At the same time, we want to maintain our culture as a development team and avoid crunch that can quickly lead to burnout or worse.”
