23 Stories About People Watching Sex Scenes With Their Parents That’ll Make You Laugh And Cringe

Sorry Mom and Dad…and everyone else.

We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community, “What’s your most awkward/hilarious ‘Whoops, I accidentally watched a movie sex scene with my parent(s) and/or guardians’ story?” and, WHEW BUDDY, they did not disappoint. Here are just a handful of the most delightfully awkward and hilarious stories shared:

1.

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Focus Features

“The year is 2005. My in-laws are Southeast Asian immigrants who came to the US in 1980. Though their kids grew up VERY American, they stuck to their traditional culture and were super-conservative Christians. They had never seen a movie in the theater before, so my husband (then boyfriend) decided to treat them to dinner and a movie to celebrate 25 years in the states. Well, one of the biggest movies that came out that year was this one…so he took us all. Needless to say, the car ride home was very quiet. They’d never talked about that night, ever. Flash forward to 2015, when a cousin came out as gay and my father-in-law reacted to the news by saying, ‘Oh, so he goes fishing on the ‘Broken Back Mountain!’ I died, y’all.”

2.

Cool World (1992)

Paramount Pictures

“My dad was a huge animation nerd, and a big fan of the animated version of The Hobbit. He heard a movie was coming out by the same illustrator and really wanted to take us to see it. I was 13, my brother was 15, and my dad took us to this shady theater to see a movie about a cartoon woman, Holli Wood, who can become human only if she orgasms while having sex with a human. Every single other person in the theater was a middle-aged man.”

3.

Girls Trip (2017)

Universal Pictures

“I watched this with my conservative mom and it was NOT ideal, especially the scene involving Tiffany Haddish and a grapefruit…”

4.

Gone Girl (2014)

20th Century Fox

“I had my wisdom teeth removed when I was 20, so I was couch-bound while recovering, all loopy on drugs. My mom came into the living room where I was and started watching TV. She eventually decided on this movie. So — unable to move — I had to watch a very graphic sex/murder scene with my mother. The silence while watching the scene was so awkward, it’s burned into my brain.”

5.

Cruel Intentions (1999)

Columbia Pictures

“When I was about 15, I convinced my parents to rent this. Cue an incredibly awkward next 90 minutes or so and me plotting 1) How to get through it with a straight face, and 2) When I could watch it again without them!”

6.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Warner Bros.

“I once made the grave mistake of agreeing to go see this in the theater with my mom and dad. All those orgies! To this day, I still don’t know why we didn’t just leave. Instead, we just looked straight ahead — which was even worse!”

7.

Meet Joe Black (1998)

Universal Pictures

“My friend and I watched this one on TV and it was really good, so I bought the DVD to show my parents…not realizing they had cut out a bunch of sex scenes on TV. I got so embarrassed, I pretended to go get a snack from the kitchen for like 10 minutes.”

8.

Fear (1996)

Universal Pictures

“I was 13 and watched it with my dad. When the roller coaster scene came on, I was red in the face and he was just as uncomfortable. My mom was out playing bingo that night and she called to check in right after that scene, and my dad exclaimed, ‘You couldn’t have called 20 seconds ago?!’ It’s been 24 years and I still cringe thinking about it.”

9.

Cold Mountain (2003)

Miramax Films

“I was visiting my grandparents (I was 19 at the time and they were in their early 80s) and we were looking for something to watch. My grandpa came across this and he said, ‘Oh, I read this book, let’s watch it!’ Despite the many graphic sex scenes, we sat through the ENTIRE THING. Then, when the movie was over, my grandpa said, ‘Well, I don’t remember all that happening in the book!’ and my grandma replied, ‘It’s called Cold Mountain…I didn’t think so many people would have their clothes off!'”

10.

Monster’s Ball (2001)

Lionsgate Films

“I was 15 and I begged my mom to let me see this with her while my dad took my siblings to see Big Fat Liar. It was probably one of the most awkward moments of my life and, to this day, I still cringe every time I see Billy Bob Thornton or Halle Berry.”

11.

Black Swan (2010)

Fox Searchlight Pictures

“When I was younger, I took ballet lessons, and my grandmother ALWAYS picked me up from school and took me to those lessons. It was a weekly bonding activity for us for years. Fast-forward to my freshman year of high school, and I’m at my grandparents’ house having dinner with them and my dad. Grandma, feeling sentimental about our ballet lesson days, decided to rent an ‘artsy ballet movie’ that she’d heard was popular. And that’s how I came to watch this in its entirety with not just my father, but my grandparents as well. My grandmother was mortified, my grandad was stoic (except that his face got progressively redder throughout the movie), and father was laughing hysterically the entire time.”

12.

Kick-Ass (2010)

Lionsgate

“I’m 23 now, but when I was younger, I ALWAYS got to pick the movie at the theater when I’d go with my dad…and he ALWAYS fell asleep. EVERY TIME. Anyway, the first time he picked the movie, it was this one. He certainly wasn’t asleep when the main character had sex with the popular girl in an alley by a dumpster. It’s burned in my brain: My dad’s expression, his ‘I’m so, so sorry,’ and his ‘Hey, maybe you should go to the bathroom now because you really shouldn’t see this.’ After that day, he was never allowed to complain about being forced to see Jeremy Sumpter being dreamy in Peter Pan three times in theaters with me ever again.”

13.

Freddy Vs. Jason (2003)

New Line Cinema

“When I was 13, I begged and pleaded with my super-strict dad to take me to see this, which was rated a HARD R. He finally agreed, and I was so excited because it was going to be my first rated-R film to see in theaters, plus blood and gore is awesome to us weird teenage girls! Anyway, I remember nothing about that movie except for the first 15 minutes where a guy and girl are banging and she’s screaming, ‘Fuck me harder!’ over and over and over again. Pretty sure a part of me died in the theater that day.”

14.

Risky Business (1983)

Warner Bros.

“The year is 1983. My father just returned from a business trip in California, where he heard about this popular ‘new movie’ and he’s going to take my mother, brother, and 13-year-old me to see it. I’m sitting on the aisle, then my brother is next, then my father, and finally my uptight, comically conservative mother. I think it was the train scene when I finally noticed her, blocked by my father, waving her arms frantically and whispering angrily at me to ‘shut my eyes.’ My brother and I were steadfast, staring straight ahead and ignoring her. She was furious. Thanks for blocking her Dad, you’re the best!”

Titanic (1997)

Paramount Pictures

“I was obsessed with the history of the Titanic as a kid, so when the movie came out (I was in middle school), my Dad picked me up early from class so we could watch it in theaters together. It was a very sweet idea…however, the drawing scene and the car scene were just about the longest few minutes of my short little life at the time. I just sunk into the theater chair, and my Dad and I didn’t make a sound for the entire three and a half hours!”

16.

Terminator (1984)

Orion Pictures

“Oh god, this is bringing back memories! I watched this classic with my parents when I was 11 or so, and nobody expected a sex scene to be in it since it was sold as a fast-paced action movie. While it wasn’t really that bad of a sex scene, it was still sooo awkward!”

17.

Blades of Glory (2007)

Paramount Pictures

“My dad convinced my mom to let me watch this with them when I was in KINDERGARTEN. I asked him what the movie was about, and he said it was about ‘ice skating.’ I asked him if it was anything like Ice Princess. He said, ‘Of course!’ Just to paint a picture, at one point in the movie, Jenna Fisher’s character, Katie, claims to be a sex addict and wears lingerie as Will Ferrell fondles her breasts and prepares to do the deed. At the end of the scene, I announced, ‘I don’t remember this part of Ice Princess!'”

Y Tu Mamá También (2001)

IFC Films

“I was staying with my future husband at his mother’s house and we were all trying to pick a movie. I remembered loving this when I saw it, so I was really excited to suggest it and watch it again. That is, until it started and I remembered that the beginning of the movie features a very steamy three-way sequence. I tried to save face by quickly saying ‘Oh, and it’s a tiny bit —’ *steamy threesome begins* ‘—graphic.’ I was mortified, but his mother ended up loving the movie after she saw the whole thing!”

365 Days (2020)

Next Film

“During the pandemic, I’ve been staying with my parents. We all love a good action movie, so when this new movie came up on Netflix, it seemed like an action-packed, kidnapping, gangster movie based on the description. I was so uncomfortable the entire time. There were SO MANY sex scenes all the way up until the end, and now I will forever remember how my mom thinks oral is ‘Gross!'”

20.

Call Me By Your Name (2017)

Sony Pictures Classics

“I watched this with my mom and when the peach scene started, we were both silent, trying to figure out/denying what was happening. When he actually started to fuck the peach, we both lost it. I screeched and ran out of the room and my mom started cackling at the top of her lungs. We both laughed so hard we cried!”

21.

After (2019)

Voltage Pictures

“The movie trailer looked pretty good, and my mom and I have a big thing for cheesy romances. We thought it would be like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before or something, but then we got to the scene at the lake…I was traumatized. From now on, I only see romance movies with my girlfriends.”

22.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Paramount Pictures

“My super-conservative mother-in-law rented this one and didn’t realize why it was rated-R. The very first sex scene, I noped out and took a nap. My ass took a three-hour-long nap that day. I never brought it up to her, but she managed to watch it in its entirety.”

And finally — Midsommar (2019)

A24

“Went to see this one with my dad and…that’s all I’m going to say.”
