Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara have Oscars ‘Beetlejuice’ reunion

Shake, shake, shake, Senora!

Beetlejuice costars Catherine O’Hara and Michael Keaton reunited at the Oscars on Sunday night, ahead of appearing in the beloved horror-comedy’s upcoming sequel.

Although they didn’t utter the name “Beetlejuice” even one out of three times, they walked out to its score and fittingly handed out trophies for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the same category their movie won at the 1989 Academy Awards. (This year’s prize went to Poor Things.)

The delightful pair stayed on stage to also present Best Production Design. After indulging in a comical back-and-forth about the ever-relatable experience of “when your chair gives out and you fall backwards and your dress flies up over your head on the one day you forgot to wear underwear,” they handed the award to Poor Things as well.

Tim Burton’s original Beetlejuice stars Keaton as the titular “ghost with the most”; Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as a recently deceased couple whose spirits are stuck in their home; O’Hara as eccentric artist Delia Deetz, who moves into the house along with her husband, Charles (Jeffrey Jones); and Winona Ryder as Charles’ daughter, moody goth teen Lydia Deetz, who befriends the ghostly former residents.

The Oscar-nominated Birdman star previously admitted to EW that he was hesitant to sign on for what would become one of several career-defining roles for him, because he couldn’t quite grasp Burton’s vision. “I liked Tim personally, but I really didn’t know what he was trying to explain with the concept of the movie. And so I said no two or three times,” Keaton said in 2021.

However, once he was in, he was all in, explaining, “I went to the makeup artist, Ve Neill, and said, ‘I want mold on my face. My hair has to look like I stuck my finger in an electric socket.’ She came up with the eyes, Tim had the idea of the striped suit, and I said, ‘These are his teeth. This is his skin.'”

He’ll be back in the striped suit and electric socket hair in Burton’s upcoming follow-up feature, titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which also sees the return of O’Hara and Ryder. Also jumping in the line are newcomers Jenna Ortega (fittingly playing Lydia’s daughter), Willem Dafoe as “a dead person,” plus Monica Bellucci and Justin Theroux.

Keaton recently revealed that he’s seen a cut of the upcoming sequel and had high praise. “I confidently say this thing is great,” he said on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is expected to arrive in theaters on Sept. 6.
